Prevention & Research Center:
About Our Center and Expertise

Prevention & Research Center

The mission of the Prevention and Research Center is to improve the health of individuals through clinical programs and research into the prevention, early detection and treatment and long-term management of diseases. In addition to fostering integration of research into clinical care, the Center offers consultative services for assessing the risk of cancer and developing management strategies.  A new and innovative program currently in development will offer services to improve and maintain health for people dealing with chronic health problems and those who want to maximize their general health and well-being.

Medical Director, Kathy J. Helzlsouer, M.D., MHS has a commitment to excellence in health care for women.  She is a nationally recognized expert in both clinical preventive services and research to improve health promotion and disease prevention strategies.  With her leadership, the services and research initiatives offered by the Center are innovative and clearly focused on improving women’s health and wellbeing across the lifespan.  If you have been diagnosed or treated for cancer or other chronic health problems, The Prevention & Research Center staff has particular training and interest in helping you improve your quality of life during treatment and beyond.

Program Offerings:

Cancer Prevention and Genetic Counseling Service - This service offers a complete evaluation of family history and other factors that may increase the risk of developing certain cancers, genetic counseling and testing, and development of a preventive health care plan.

Be Well, Stay Healthy - A new clinical program for breast cancer survivors fighting fatigue.  This holistic group-based program will help women regain energy and improve overall health after breast cancer treatment.  Groups are forming now.  The program is partially funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and The Mercy Mission Fund.

Research Studies - Research is an integral part of clinical care.  Ongoing research studies within the Center include participation in cancer treatment trials, evaluation of interventions for the relief of persistent fatigue after cancer treatment, and an ongoing cohort study.
