Employment Benefits

In the tradition of caring displayed by the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center offers a comprehensive benefits package to both full time and part time employees. Many of Mercy's benefits are provided on a pre-tax basis, which will help reduce income taxes and increase your take home pay. Most of Mercy's insurance plans become effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.

Medical

Provided by CareFirst

Mercy offers three health insurance options:

  • CareFirst BC/BS EPO Plan (In-Network Only PPO)
    • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) in-network only plan
    • You must utilize PPO providers in order to have benefits paid under this plan. There is no out-of-network coverage.
    • No need to select a Primary Care Physician (PCP) or to obtain referrals before receiving care
    • Prescription Drug Benefits
    • Vision Coverage
  • Blue Choice Plan
    • All care coordinated through your Primary Care Physician (PCP) utilizing the Blue Choice Network
    • Low Copays
    • Prescription Drug Benefits

  • Blue Choice Mercy HMO 80/20 Plan
    • All care coordinated through your Primary Care Physician (PCP) utilizing the Blue Choice Network
    • 20% Coinsurance (after meeting deductible), unless services performed at Mercy

    This program allows employees earning $15.00 or less an hour to receive a $6 credit per pay off of their health insurance cost. This results in over $150 in savings per year!

Dental

Mercy offers two dental plans through CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield

  • BC/BS Traditional Plan
    • Deductible: $75 Individual/$150 Family
    • Chose from a large network of dentists
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
    • Deductible: $50 Individual/$100 Family
  • Both plans cover:
    • Diagnostic & Preventive Services (oral exam, x-rays)
    • General Services (fillings, root canals)
    • Major Services (bridges, crowns)
    • Orthodontics ($1,250 max)

Life Insurance

Mercy provides Basic Life insurance and the ability to purchase additional coverage.

  • Basic Life Insurance
    • 2 times annual salary (up to maximum of $50,000)
    • Spouse covered for $2,000
    • Children covered for $1,000
  • Optional Term Life Insurance
    • You may elect an additional 1, 2 or 3 times your annual salary in life insurance coverage

Long Term Disability

Mercy provides full-time employees with Long Term Disability benefits at no cost. LTD Benefits begin on the 180th day of continuous disability and provide employees with the lesser amount of 60% of their monthly salary or $9,000 per month.

Voluntary Income Protection

Employees may elect to replace their income for a period of disability should they need to maintain their income before Long Term Disability is effective. This program is fully employee-paid. Costs vary based upon age and replacement salary but will not increase after enrollment.

Retirement Plans

Provided by Fidelity Investments

Mercy offers a 401(k) Plan through Fidelity Investments.

  • Employees may contribute up to 100% of their income on a pre-tax basis up to the IRS maximum limit ($15,500 for 2007). Some employees over age 50 may be eligible for a catch-up provision in the amount of $5,000/year for 2007).
  • After 1 year of service, employees are eligible for an Employer Match beginning the next calendar quarter. Mercy will match employee contributions on a quarterly basis of $.50 for every $1.00 contributed by the employee up to 6%.

In addition Mercy offers a 457(b) Plan through Fidelity Investments.

  • Employees may contribute up to 100% of their income on a pre-tax basis up to the IRS maximum limit ($15,500 for 2007)
  • Employees will not receive a match on the deferrals on this plan.
  • Loans are not available under this plan.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Provided by BeniSource

Mercy offers both Health Care and Dependent Care Accounts. Employees can set aside up to $5,000 per year on a pre-tax basis to pay for eligible health care or dependent care expenses. We make reimbursement easy. You can use your FSA Debit card to pay your copays and coinsurance at any physician or dental office, pharmacies or vision service locations that accept MasterCard. Therefore, you can take advantage of your pre-tax account without the traditional hassle of claims forms (you may chose to submit claims forms if you wish). In addition you may have your return direct deposited into an account of your choice.

Tuition Reimbursement

This program is available to all regular status employees who are regularly scheduled and budgeted in at least a .4 FTE position or above and on staff for a minimum of six months. Grant funded employees are not eligible to participate in this program. Employees who choose to take advantage of this program must be enrolled in a continuous course of study and the course of study must have a direct relationship to one's job or to a hospital related occupation. Employees may choose where they enroll and how many credits they take each semester.

Tuition Reimbursement will be based on the employee's budgeted hours. Reimbursement is made based on the cost of the actual tuition expense and does not apply to fees, books, etc. Please see the schedule below for a schedule of how the benefits will be paid out:

80 hours per pay or 1.0= 100%
72 hours per pay or .9= 100%
64 hours per pay or .8= 80%
56 hours per pay or .7= 70%
48 hours per pay or .6= 60%
40 hours per pay or .5= 50%
32 hours per pay or .4= 40%

*Reimbursement will take place based upon the successful completion of the approved course of study and the employee's submission on the tuition application, tuition receipt and grade report. Your application must be approved before you start classes to be eligible for reimbursement.

  • $6,500 per calendar year cap on the tuition benefit
  • Employees making $15.00 an hour or less are eligible to have their tuition prepaid
  • You may enroll in any accredited school
  • You may take job-related and/or hospital related courses
  • Scholarship and Student Loan Repayment Program (FOR NURSING AND PHARMACY)
  • A two-year commitment following completion of studies is required upon enrollment in the program

Nursing Scholarship

Due to the critical nursing shortage across the United States, this program is designed to encourage individuals to pursue a Nursing degree. In order to be eligible for this program, students must have declared nursing as a major in an accredited school. Individuals seeking acceptance into this program must have successfully completed one year of college with a GPA of at least 3.0 and have been approved for funding by the Scholarship Committee. The scholarship will be in the form of a loan to be forgiven at the rate of $3,000 per year of employment.

Interested applicants must submit the following information to the Executive Assistant in Human Resources.

  • A completed Mercy Employment Application.
  • Two written recommendations from instructors, employers or other professionals.
  • A copy of a college transcript.
  • An essay prepared by the student that describes why they want to become a nurse and the contribution they can make to Mercy Medical Center.
  • A signed promissory note.
  • A statement/record of the estimated annual tuition fees.
