Mark M. Applefeld, M.D.

Mark M. Applefeld, M.D.

Mark M. Applefeld, M.D., is Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Mercy Medical Center as well the Director of The Heart Center at Mercy. Dr. Applefeld is also Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

A graduate of Washington and Lee University, Dr. Applefeld earned his medical degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. After completing his internship and residency in Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital, Dr. Applefeld performed his fellowship in Cardiology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He then served as Chief Resident in Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital.

Dr. Applefeld is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He is a former president of the Maryland Chapter of the American Heart Association as well as a member of other professional associations including Alpha Omega Alpha, American College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, and Maryland Society of Cardiology.

Board Certified in Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Applefeld’s particular interests are clinical cardiology, heart failure, and cardiac disease in cancer patients. He has authored numerous publications, participated in editorial review boards and has lectured extensively nationally.

Thea N. Calkins, M.D.

Thea N. Calkins, M.D.

Thea N. Calkins, M.D., is Director of Echocardiography in The Heart Center at Mercy.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Calkins received her medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Calkins completed fellowships in Cardiology at both Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Michigan Hospital.

Board Certified in Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Calkins’ specialties include non-invasive cardiology, transesophageal echocardiography, and transthoracic echo cardiography.

Amish C. Sura, M.D.

Amish C. Sura, M.D.

Amish C. Sura, M.D., an invasive cardiologist in The Heart Center at Mercy, earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Sura completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and performed his fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical School.

Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Dr. Sura is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the American Society of Internal Medicine.

Robert V. Zawodny, M.D.

Robert V. Zawodny, M.D.

Robert V. Zawodny, M.D., is the Director of Invasive Cardiology in The Heart Center at Mercy.

Dr. Zawodny earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and his fellowship in Cardiology at the same institution.

Dr. Zawodny is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Interventional Cardiology.
