Radiation Oncology
Radiation Oncology at Mercy, led by Maria
Jacobs, M.D. and Marlana Ottinger, M.D., sets the highest standards of care
for patients with cancer. Physicians and staff combine
the latest in treatment techniques with state-of-the-art technology
to benefit each patient.
More than half of all cancer patients will require radiation
therapy as part of their cancer care, according to the National
Cancer Institute. This treatment can be delivered both externally
and
internally. Radiation
produced by photon (x-rays) or electron beams through a linear
accelerator is known as external beam therapy. Radiation
therapy can also be given internally by either temporary or permanent
placement of radioactive sources (known as brachytherapy or
implant therapy).
The services of Radiation Oncology at Mercy are part of an integrated
cancer management strategy involving surgery and chemotherapy
in addition to radiation therapy.
